Why Christopher Hitchens isn't funny
Once again, I am totally psychic. Earlier this year I was thinking of writing an article tackling the old rusty saw that women aren't funny. Then due to a combination of laziness, distraction by my multitude of other awesome ideas, and the thought that, "Duh, of course women are funny, who doesn't know that?" the article never got pitched.
Now the opposite article has been written by Christopher Hitchens for the latest Vanity Fair, entitled, "Why Women Aren't Funny." The article was actually distributed by two very funny women, Julie Klausner and Jackie Clarke, last night at their very funny show, OBSESSED. And they pretty much ripped Hitchey a new dumb-hole, which he was asking for by writing such an article to begin with.
I read it this morning on the subway, and when I got to the following sentence, I decided the article had to be a satire: "For women, reproduction is, if not the only thing, certainly the main thing." He can't be serious. But if it is a satire, it's not funny.
I won't bother refuting the piece point by point, like that women don't make jokes "about calamitous visits to...the bathroom" (clearly he never visited the all-girl office I used to work in!), because as anyone who reads this blog knows, women are funny. DUH. This guy says farts are a major staple of humor (hence, why dudes are more adept to being funny than women), so let's all envision me ripping a major heater in Hitchens' face.
Now, that would be funny.

I am writing a letter to the editor about that one. One of those, "As a subscriber...and I will never buy your magazine again." type of ones.

lioux: i know, right? damn. sarah: yesss! and "anonymous," aka my bf who for some reason insists on posting anonymously: yes, i totally got that term from you. well i guess this proves hitchens is right after all...women are here foremost for breeding, therefore lady comics wear big shoulder pads and can only make clumsy jokes about their periods.

As someone who's worked in all female and all male environments, I'd have to agree with The Hitch. Dudes are funnier (when the ladies come up with a funnier name for themselves than "dude" maybe we can reexamine the topic).
Or maybe humor is gender-related. Ladies prefer lady humor and dudes prefer dude humor.
The saddest fact is that most people aren't funny (including most of the people who think they are funny).

Wow, latest anonymous commenter, so having worked in both all- male and all-female offices, you are both female and male?
I think humor might be somewhat gender related, although women might be more likely to accept male humor than men are willing to accept female humor. It reminds me of that study that was done with the SATs, which showed that men tested worse in written scenarios that had a female protagonist, but the reverse was not true for women. Women are used to getting that male POV. Whereas men do not want to go there and are also like "talk to the hand."
I also think it's sad that you don't know many funny people.

Sorry, I'm not a hermaphrodite--I should have wrote, "As a dude who's worked...."
Anyway, you may be onto something there. Women are probably more interested in what guys are up to than vice versa (unless, of course, it has to do with sex and then guys are almost pathologically interested).
Actually, I've been fortunate to know quite a few funny people. But it's generally rare when I meet them.
